Luxurious baths are not a modern invention. It was the Romans, circa 2nd century BC, who first employed human inventiveness and ingenuity to build and maintain places to keep their bodies clean. The Roman baths, however, are public places for communal bodily cleansing as well as for socializing and exchanging local news, much different from the private bathrooms of today. Nonetheless, many modern lavatory styles of today are of Romanesque inspiration especially in bathroom sinks. In fact, tiling has remained almost exactly the same throughout the centuries. We have easier ways of grout cleaning than the Romans did, but the essence remains the same.

The most common style if bathroom sink where the Roman influence may be found is in pedestal sinks. In this type of sink, the pedestal itself is usually patterned after a Roman column with the bowl stylishly designed on top. This pedestal type of a lavatory fixture is not only stylish but its freestanding design makes it also ideal as a small bathroom sink suited in a powder room.

//-->

Another ideal bathroom space-saver wherein some Roman design could also be ingeniously incorporated is a wall-hung bathroom sink. As its name suggests, this type of bathroom fixture is attached to the wall. Like the pedestal type, this bathroom sink is most appropriate for bathrooms with limited space. Installation can be adjusted at any convenient height with a towel bar provided.

To adapt an entire lavatory or just the bathroom sink to a Roman or any other motif, plumbing fixture manufacturers employ various materials to their products. Some of these materials include natural stone, enamelled cast iron, glass, stainless steel and vitreous china.

Ceramic-based bathroom sinks are made of vitreous china or fireclay. These sinks are treasured for their smooth and glossy finish. Sculpted or hand-painted designs of various colors could be easily incorporated to these sinks which have a durable material component. But still, the sink could be damaged if a heavy object is dropped into the bowl on purpose or by accident.

Elegance in the bath could be enhanced by glass bathroom sinks. Typically, these lavatory fixtures are made from tempered glass which are quite durable and withstand ordinary household use. There are some glass sinks that are not made of tempered glass and these should be installed only in bathrooms with few users. Therefore, it is important to determine whether the glass sinks being considered for purchase is made of tempered glass or not. Also, a mirror instead of a medicine cabinet should ideally be the fixture above a glass sink which could be severely damaged if a heavy object falls upon it. There should also be regular and proper maintenance of glass sinks which should be always wiped down and dried to prevent spots from showing on their surface.

One of the most durable bathroom sinks are those made of stainless steel. These stainless steel sinks are made from 18 or 20-gauge steel combined with a chrome–nickel material. This combination makes these sinks really robust and rust-proof. Some sound-proofing material is also incorporated as undercoating in some stainless steel bathroom sinks not only to reduce noise from pouring water but also to inhibit condensation, which sure indicates the wide leaps in lavatories since the Romans invented their public baths.
